Your Union Upgrade Has Begun.

I hope you all had a Happy Easter! If you are currently revising for exams or just taking a break from study, then I hope you are feeling good and looking forward to the summer term around campus.

As an update on our Union Upgrade Project, I am pleased to say that the two contractors selected to compete for the main appointment, both submitted tenders as expected just prior to Easter. The main contract for work on-site should therefore begin as planned early May.

Riley Smith Hall scaffolding from the inside!

The Old Bar space has already gone under construction, along with the Riley Smith Hall above, so that we can see these refurbishments delivered for September. Once the main contractor is confirmed (mid-April) we will be negotiating on the final project plan and be able to confirm the timings for exactly when other spaces receive their facelift over the next year. Here’s an image for the Riley Smith Hall just filled with scaffolding and no floor now which shows the scale of work being undertaken behind the closed doors.

Thank you to everyone who took part in feedback sessions around the Old Bar designs, as well as Hidden Cafe, Mine and Raven Theatre. We have generated lots of comments which have been given directly to the designers and should impact the respective schemes. Below is the revised interior design images based on your feedback.

Second round of interior design images for Old Bar

The next year in LUU is going to be exciting as spaces are both removed from use and then given back to us after refurbishment. Students graduating in 2016 should know that you are all invited back whenever you want to see how the LUU building is doing. Students who carry on after this year will be the main beneficiaries of our new spaces and we will keep you all informed through the usual channels.

We continue to invite feedback on the scheme and even when the main project is completed, it is just the way we work as a students’ union – we constantly want to improve on the basis of what our members tell us.

Old Bar gets a refresh without losing any of its character!

The summer term is always exciting and we begin with Celebrate Week in a few weeks’ time. The LUU teams are committed to delivering a great Summer Ball and will be on hand to make sure Graduation activity is as memorable as ever. Any building work will be scheduled around these events with consideration given to ensure the very best experience.

As ever, if you have any questions or comments please use the section on this website or email
