The Union to get some much-needed TLC this Valentine’s Day

I love the LUU building, and as we talk about our plans I keep hearing the great stories and memories which are associated with this building that is so loved. We are now much further into the project development and very close to finalising many of the key aspects to create new memories into the future.

I am excited by the interior designs which are in development which will really fulfil the ideas and images students and staff have put forward since we began talking about improving the building. Our design partners will be circulating draft plans for feedback as they develop, which will feature on the website dedicated to the project.

The Riley Smith Hall has been handed over for construction and we have set up the temporary theatre/stage in the Refectory. Lots of volunteers and staff have worked hard to make this happen and I think the plans for shows and events in that space be fantastic in the next term.

The plan so far…

Plans continue to be subject to change once contractors are appointed, but an overview of the key activity expected over the next few months is outlined below:

February: Final stages of work from interior designers, final plans drawn up based upon cost savings and prioritisation.

March: Enabling works completed, including removal of any hazardous materials ready for further destructive works. Final presentations and the appointment of the main contractor.

April/May: Main contractor starts on site in phased approach to programme of work covering Lounge, Mine, Pulse and Raven Theatre.

June: Following Leeds Ball and the end of the summer term, we expect to start refurbishment of the Old Bar.

July – August: Works continue, with every effort made to maintain normal service across Leeds University Union.

September: Completion of Phase One – Riley Smith Hall, New Raven Theatre, Dance Studios and refurbishment of current Mine and Pulse to be more effective activity spaces.

Please continue to send any feedback to our ideas to and look out for designs on display in the Foyer around our AGM on February 23rd.
