ecovered from our Big Building Reveal last month? Well the best is yet to come! We’re just beginning to develop the finer details of individual projects within the scheme and I can’t wait to start sharing them with you.
Our first new development is about to launch with the opening of our brand new roof garden on Level 2 of the Union building. Based just next door to the Community Office, we’re expanding the work of our Green Exchange and Bardon Grange teams to introduce more edible growing space on campus.
The Bardon Grange project is a community food growing project that gives students, staff, and other members of the local community the opportunity to grow organic food in a communal growing space.
Following on from the success of our work in Oxley and the Sustainable Garden opposite the Roger Stevens building, we’re celebrating our love for local food by investing in spaces that can grow produce for your next lunch at Terrace or the Salad Box. We’ll also be running regular volunteering sessions so you can get stuck in while we “Eat, Learn and Grow” with Bardon Grange.
The Union Upgrade isn’t only ambitious within our building – it’s also going to take us to places we’ve never been before.
Over the past two years we’ve been working hard to secure more space for the Union services that you know and love, and I’m over the moon to announce that from September 2015 your Union will be adopting the Mezz Cafe above the Refectory!
This new space will become a hub for student-led activity. Our ethos here, as always, will be “for students, by students”. You’ll have the opportunity to shape everything from the design layout to the food and drink on our menu. The cafe will provide intern opportunities for students to manage the outlet and gain invaluable employability skills, and we’ll also be opening the space up for improved club and society use.
To top it off, the space will bring a major collaboration project between Leeds University Union and the University Careers Centre. We’ll be creating a one-stop shop for all things careers; employability skills sessions, advice and part-time work – you’ll be able to get all the support you need right here at the heart of campus.
We’ll be bringing you further updates over the coming months so make sure you keep an eye out for opportunities to have your say on our brand new Union coffee company!
